Acoustic numbers are useful only when buyers know what was tested and how. A decibel figure without a model, test method, configuration and report can create a misleading comparison.
Start with the test question
Some tests assess how much speech or sound is reduced between the inside and outside of a pod. Others assess individual building elements or sound absorption within a room. These results describe different properties and should not be ranked as if they were interchangeable.
Absorption inside the pod and sound reduction through the enclosure describe different characteristics. Absorptive finishes may control reflections within the pod, while enclosure testing addresses sound transmitted between the pod and the surrounding space. Compare like with like.
An office pod’s acoustic performance comes from the complete assembly rather than one material alone. Panels, glazing, doors, seals, joints, ventilation paths and installation quality all affect how sound travels. A list of materials or a result for one component cannot establish the acoustic rating of the complete pod.
Understand the test method
For furniture ensembles and enclosures intended to provide speech privacy, ISO 23351-1 specifies a laboratory method for determining speech level reduction. The result describes how the tested product reduces speech from a person speaking inside it.
Other methods may assess building elements or assemblies. For example, ASTM E90 addresses the laboratory measurement of airborne sound transmission loss through building partitions and elements. A result for a wall, door or glazing element should not automatically be treated as the result for the complete pod.
Always identify the quantity reported, the object tested and the test conditions before comparing two numbers. Results produced by different methods should not be ranked as though they measure the same characteristic.
Ask for five details
- The exact model and size tested.
- The glazing, door, seals and ventilation configuration.
- The test standard or documented method.
- The laboratory and report date.
- The result and its stated limitations.
Where a classification system is used, request the complete report and confirm how the class was derived. Check whether the test took place in a laboratory or in the installed field condition.
Where laboratory accreditation is stated, confirm whether the laboratory’s accreditation scope covers the test method used. A laboratory name or accreditation logo alone does not establish that every test it performs falls within the accredited scope.
Confirm whether optional glazing, door, ventilation or finish choices differ from the tested sample and whether those differences affect the reported result. Keep the complete report with the approved product schedule so the ordered configuration can be checked against the evidence at delivery and handover.
Connect the result to the real site
Performance in use depends on installation, surrounding background sound, user voice level, distance and the type of information being discussed.
“Soundproof” suggests complete isolation and should be avoided unless the evidence supports that interpretation. Highly confidential activities may need specialist design beyond a freestanding pod.
Review more than acoustics
An acoustic rating answers only one part of the selection question. Capacity, ventilation, comfort, accessibility, fire and egress requirements, electrical connections, delivery access and maintenance all affect suitability.
Use acoustic evidence as one part of a project decision.

- Confirm the exact model, size and tested configuration.
- Identify the test method and result being reported.
- Compare results produced by equivalent methods.
- Check whether optional components are covered by the test.
- Record the ordered configuration.
- Inspect seals and assembly at handover.
- Confirm the intended privacy level with the project team.
